Widow's Tears

A simple brief thought on Scottish Independance. Were the outdated union not of some very high value to England and the English, why would they fight so to try to keep it? There are only so many slices to a pie, for one to have more, another must have less. Lastly - to those Scottish "Loyalists" - to whom are you loyal? Scots royalty died in the 1700's so it can be no Scots crown - And certainly not it appears to those who came before, that bled for Scotland and her freedom !

In the words of Burns, as he wrote from the heart. Scots, wha hae wi' Wallace bled, Scots, wham Bruce has aften led, Welcome to your gory bed, Or to victorie. Now's the day, and now's the hour; See the front o' battle lour; See approach proud Edward's power, Chains and slaverie. Wha would be a traitor-knave? Wha can fill a coward's grave? Wha sae base as be a Slave? Let him turn and flie: Wha for Scotland's king and law, Freedom's sword will strongly draw, Free-man stand, or free-man fa', Let him follow me. By Oppression's woes and pains! By your Sons in servile chains! We will drain our dearest veins, But they shall be free! Lay the proud Usurpers low! Tyrants fall in every foe! Liberty's in every blow! Let us Do - or Die!!! Choose your destiny.
A Respectful Dedication
This song was written from the perspective of those left behind, after the battle of Flodden, some 500 years ago, however it remains as poignant today as it was then. This song is therefore respectfully dedicated to the service men / women and their families upon who's sacrifice we rely. This dedication goes not simply to the Scots at arms - but to all in harms way. This dedication was inspired by Matt Lammers - serving in Iraq where he was severely injured, June 2007. Matt is a nephew of a good friend, Bob Reeder.
‘Twas in the year fifteen hundred and three, My darling Jamie came to me, Strong and handsome for all to see, My own true love he’d ever be. In that late Autumn we were wed, And joy was in our marriage bed, Our future now seemed set in stone Joined forever, never alone, The years they passed, oh how they flew, Faster than we ever knew, Then came the call from our King James, To battle now in Scotland’s name. You left our home at Lamas Tide, Upon your face your smile was wide, To join the laird, up on the law, And meet the men wha’d cross the wa’. Into England you were sent, Upon the de’il’s own work bent, You travelled south to Flodden Field, And stoutly did refuse to yield. Around you the flower of Scotland fell English longbows that sang of hell, Yet unto your country you stood true, ‘Till a blooded spear ran your body through. No man to me did they bring home, No life, no love, it all was gone, The tales of your deeds were all I had, They will not fill my empty bed, With the Douglas men, you softly lie, Not again to see, dear Scotland’s sky, And all left to me, in my minds eye, Are the widow’s tears I softly cry…..
